Life safety in buildings is guided by a standard that specifies how to protect occupants during fires and emergencies. That standard is NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code. It sets the requirements for means of egress, occupancy classifications, fire protection features, and emergency planning to help ensure safe evacuation and occupant protection. Authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) commonly adopt NFPA 101 as the baseline for life safety in buildings. The other codes serve different purposes: NFPA 72 deals with fire alarm and detection systems, NFPA 70 is the National Electrical Code, and NFPA 13 covers the installation of sprinkler systems. Those codes address specific systems rather than the overall life-safety framework, so they’re not the Life Safety Code.
